Video: 911 calls released after horrific Fla. pileup????????????????????



>> we are now hearing 911 calls from a deadly pile-up on a florida highway triggered by fog and smoke from a brush fire . this morning there are questions about why the road was open at all. mark potter has details. good morning to you.

>> reporter: good morning, matt. among the ten people killed in the horrible accidents were five members of a church in georgia including the pastor, his wife and one of their daughters. authorities say heavy smoke from a wildfire mixed with fog led to the horrific string of accidents in which 20 cars and trucks slammed into each other, some catching fire. the pile-ups occurred in the dark on 4:00 a.m . sunday. terrified callers to 91 1 describe one crash after the other.

>> oh, my god, oh. [ crash ]

>> oh, my god. what's going on?

>> we are getting help out there.

>> how many vehicles have been involved that you have seen so far?

>> we cannot see, ma'am. this is the third one already.

>> reporter: a few minutes later the same car described many more crashes as cars trucks piled up on the highway.

>> how many vehicles? was that another one?

>> yes, ma'am.

>> how many vehicles now?

>> 16.

>> okay. do you see any fire? do you see anything like that?

>> no fire. we can't see.

>> okay.

>> you can hardly even see your hazards.

>> reporter: in the mess, workers cut many victims from the wreckage. steven camp survived being hit twice and said he saw another driver get killed.

>> it looked like a terrorist attack. you could see the pain, uncertainty and despair on their face.

>> reporter: it's like impossible to see. the haze is, a, the smoke, it's very thick.

>> reporter: as firefighters worked to extinguish hot spots from the fire, the florida highway patrol face questions about why the foggy and smoky highway was open after being closed because of poor conditions earlier that day.

>> the supervisor determined the conditions were improving and continued to monitor the roadway. based on that they made the decision to open the roadway.

>> reporter: officials are also trying to determine what caused the wildfire and whether it was arson. in addition to that, rick scott , the florida governor , is calling for an investigation into why the florida highway patrol re-opened i-75 which services about 62,000 drivers per day in
