Concrete Curing & Freezing Temps - Building & Construction - DIY ...

For cold weather concreting, the temperature of the base is one of the major factors.

Protect the soil from freezing of if you have some snow (an insulation bonus) cover with an insulating blanket to use the heat of the soil as a benefit. This is common to do in advance when footings and basements are built in -0F temperatures. Blankets can be rented easily from a contractor rental supply store.

Forget about the air temperatures and make sure the concrete is as warm as possible (warm mixing water) and a high cement mix is used or Type III (high early strength cement) is in the mix. Cover the poured concrete with whatever is available and allow the heat of hydration to to allow proper curing and use the soil heat.

To get real durability, protect the concrete and allow it to cure as long as possible (Type III cement will decrease the time somewhat). This is S.O.P. for concreting in very cold climates.

Protection of the soil base and the newly poured/placed concrete is the key. the weathermen with the projections and scares of colf air temperatures are good for attention and "following updates", but do not affect the soil or protected concrete much.
