(AP) ? One putt changed everything for Ryo Ishikawa and sent Riviera winner Bill Haas home early Wednesday from the Match Play Championship.

Ishikawa was on the verge of losing on the 17th hole when he hit 7-iron to 18 feet. Haas was 1 up and hit his approach to 5 feet. But the Japanese star holed his birdie putt, Haas missed, and Ishikawa won on the 18th hole with a par to advance to the second round at Dove Mountain.

The format lived up its reputation as the most exciting in golf. Five of the opening six matches went to the 18th hole, and three required extra holes.

Tiger Woods lost the first two holes, but squared his match against Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano on the seventh with a 50-foot birdie.
