Gmail Shortcuts, Lending Money, and Sugru Preservation

Readers offer their best tips for navigating Gmail, lending money to your friends, and making Sugru last longer.

Every day we receive boatloads of great reader tips in our inbox, but for various reasons?maybe they're a bit too niche, maybe we couldn't find a good way to present it, or maybe we just couldn't fit it in?the tip didn't make the front page. From the Tips Box is where we round up some of our favorites for your buffet-style consumption. Got a tip of your own to share? Add it in the comments, email it to tips at lifehacker.com, or share it over at our user-run blog, Hackerspace.

Right-Click to Archive, Delete or Mark as Unread in Gmail

Santhosh finds a new option in Gmail:

The latest Gmail upgrade allows users to right click messages to bring up a simple menu to archive, delete or mark messages as unread. Useful ninja tip if your are hands are away from the keyboard.

If you have the new tabbed interface, it'll also allow you to move that message to a new tab.

The new feature is an interesting choice, making Gmail a bit more like a desktop client. Annoying for those of us that used the old message preview lab, however.

Figure Out a Repayment Schedule Before You Lend Money

Obarth adds a useful money-lending tip to this recent guide:

Ask for checks for the whole amount you're lending, and agree on the schedule you'll be cashing them in. No hunting the friend down every week/fortnight/month for your repayment. No wondering whether it's appropriate to ask for your money, how much of it, whether you want their friendship more than your money...No poisoning your relationship with the issue. You can even fight and break off, and still get the financials squared.

Keep Sugru in the Fridge to Preserve It Longer (and Save Money)

Ironwolfe solves a couple Sugru annoyances:

Not sure if anyone has posted this yet, but I keep my Sugru in the refrigerator inside a ziploc bag. I buy it bulk to save money and it stays fresh for much longer.

Turn Page Styles On and Off with a Hotkey

Gmail Shortcuts, Lending Money, and Sugru Preservation

Moon switches back and forth between styles in Firefox:

I've been working on an AutoHotkey-based toggler for Firefox, one that turns page styles on and off?with one key combo, not two?as it has been in past tries at a script. Before, the best I could do was to have the Win key and numpad keys 2 and 8 act counter to each other. One combo would turn styles off, the other would put them back.

I wanted the AHK toggle to be handled by just one key action. I worked out the following, which uses Win key and 2 on the numeric keypad.

#IfWinActive ahk_class MozillaWindowClass ; checks that Fox is active #Numpad2:: ; toggle page styles on and off if toggle := !toggle { Send {Alt Down} sleep 25 send, {v} sleep 25 send, {y} sleep 25 send, {n} ; no styles sleep 25 Send {Alt Up} } else { Send {Alt Down} sleep 25 send, {v} sleep 25 send, {y} sleep 25 send, {b} ; styles reenabled sleep 25 Send {Alt Up} } return

If you're comfortable at all with AHK or editing scripts in general, you can change the combo and the sleep times. You can even change what the toggle actually does, though I haven't been able to think of another use for it.

Check out Moon's original post on Hackerspace for more, as well as an Internet Explorer version of the script.
