Winterlude Week 2 Highlights: Second week of exciting activities ...

Second week of exciting activities includes: ice carving, figure skating, comedy shows, hot fashions, Yukon days, a shinny showdown and the Imjin Classic

The National Capital Commission (NCC) wishes to remind residents and visitors that the second week of the 35th edition of Winterlude, the Capital?s winter celebration, promises to be an exciting one. Winterlude continues in the Capital Region until February 18, 2013.

Here is a sampling of some of the activities taking place during the second week of Winterlude.

Marion Dewar Plaza at Ottawa City Hall

Winterlude?s newest site, MarionDewarPlazaat OttawaCity Hall, is the place to be on Friday and Saturday night to see the multi-sensory show IgNight! featuring musical performances, aerial dancers, and interactive projections. Each night, the show is followed by an outdoor DJ dance party showcasing:

  • on Friday night, Yukon Night, featuring Kelvin Smoler, Infinite Movement and Claire Ness;
  • on Saturday night, DJ Night With Lucie Tic, plus sweet treats at the Enbridge Cabin (while supplies last).

Enbridge ?Energy on Ice? skating performances take place on the Rink of Dreams Saturdays and Sundays at 11:30 am, 1:30 pm and 3:30 pm.

The Rideau Canal Skateway

The Rideau Canal Skateway is centre stage for many activities during Winterlude?s second weekend.

This Saturday at 11 am, the world-famous ice surface will host the Alumni Shinny Showdown, where Ottawa Senators Alumni and Team Canada Women?s Alumni will take to the ice at the National Arts Centre (NAC). One hour prior to the game, fans are invited to wear their favourite hockey jersey and join the players in a Parade of Jerseys, fromDowsLake (Bronson Rest area) to the NAC.

On Sunday at 10:30 am, a very special hockey game is planned on the Skateway at the NAC. The ?Imjin Classic? will commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Korean War Armistice. This game is in honour of Canadians who defended theRepublic ofKorea ? and playedCanada?s favourite winter sport on the frozenImjinRiver during the war.

Also this weekend, teams from across Canadawill compete in the 5th Annual Great Canadian Beaver Cup Pond Hockey Championship atDowsLake.

While at DowsLake, visitors can test their skills at the hardest shot, most accurate shot, obstacle course ? and much more at the Giant Tiger Interactive Hockey Zone.

Visitors to the Skateway will also have the opportunity to sign up for a free 45-minute Enbridge Learn to Skate session, or enjoy a free hot chocolate and capture their Winterlude memories on film in the American Express Lounge atFifth Avenue.

Open for its 43rd season on January 18, this fantastic 7.8-kilometre ice surface offers families and fun-seekers alike a wide variety of services including rest areas, food concessions, skate and sleigh rentals, skate sharpening, and boot check services.

Crystal Garden in Confederation Park

On Thursday, February 7, Veterans Affairs Canada will illuminate a unique ice sculpture to mark the 60th anniversary of the Korean War armistice. Visitors to the Crystal Garden can take in this impressive replica in ice of Statue of Brothers, found at the War Memorial of Korea inSeoul.

This Saturday, professional ice carvers face off in an ice-carving championship. On Sunday, visitors will learn the secrets of ice carving techniques and how the carvers use their tools to create a work of art from a block of ice.

Ice sculpture enthusiasts will also want to take in the crystalline masterpieces created at the 26th International Ice-Carving Competition during the first weekend of Winterlude and vote for their favourite sculpture for a chance to win great prizes.

What?s more, visitors to Crystal Garden will have the opportunity to:

  • marvel at outdoor Lantern Garden, a gift from the city ofJinju;
  • visit an authentic lavvu for Norwegian storytelling and snow-lantern making;
  • discover IllumiNation, an outdoor light art gallery featuring unique Canadian works of art;
  • meet the Kettle Boys for some ?olde time? fun;
  • celebrate the Year of the Polar Bear with an ice bear quest;
  • learn about ephemeral art and create their own sculpture, or participate in making an ice mosaic sculpture;
  • experience the northern lights through the lens of world experts on the auroras;
  • see Mighty Muskox ? prehistoric beasts that still roamCanada?sNorthwest Territories ? carved in ice;
  • find out more about Canada?s Arctic and celebrate the centennial of the first Canadian Arctic Expedition

Snowflake Kingdom in Jacques-Cartier Park, Gatineau

Presented by the NCC and the Ville de Gatineau, Snowflake Kingdom is North America?s biggest snow playground. It is the ideal destination for the young and the young at heart. This family friendly paradise features giant snow slides and an outdoor amphitheatre.

This weekend in SnowflakeKingdom, it?s Yukon Days featuring a Yukon urban dance party, A Day in Yukon performances, and Team Yukon Canada Snow Carvers who will create a masterpiece snow carving celebrating the 30th anniversary of the Yukon Quest International Sled Dog Race.

For the 35th edition of Winterlude, more than 75 programming partners, from Ottawa and Gatineau?s private and public sectors, have come together to offer visitors a wide-range of indoor and outdoor activities aimed at animating the Capital like never before.
