Specialized bus will offer breast-cancer screening

In an effort to reach out to the medically underserved, three area groups have banded together to underwrite the cost of delivering a specialized service that will mobilize a pair of digital mammography machines into various Western New York communities.

The cancer-screening service, handled by specially-designed bus, is being financed by the Erie County Medical Center?

Western New York Breast Health will manage the bus while Erie County Medical Center Lifeline Foundation will own and maintain the vehicle.

The bus is one of a just a handful in operation around the country and comes at a time when Western New York has one of the highest reported rates of new breast cancer patients among upstate communities. It also has one of the highest rates of breast cancer-related deaths.

Officials said all women are welcome for mammographies on the bus, including those with insurance or those covered by Medicaid or Medicare, as well as the uninsured. Exams will require a prescription, but women without a primary-care physician can obtain a script at the bus. Appointments will be necessary and an 800-number will be established, as will website links.

?This is a great community program that will actually save lives,? said Jody Lomeo, ECMC?s CEO and Foundation board member. ?We hardly finished our presentation when the Sabres alumni and First Niagara said ?yes? and stepped up to fund this. We all know someone touched by breast cancer and we all want to see earlier diagnosis and treatment.?

The bus will tour inner-city as well as rural areas of the region. The 45-foot bus will be parked at festivals, health fairs, churches, and community centers to mention a few. ECMC?s bus is expected to test more than 1,500 in its first year.

?We say the bus is for the ?underserved?, it is really for the ?never-served?,? said John Koelmel, First Niagara president and CEO. ?We all know that the key to surviving any cancer, but especially breast cancer, is early detection and treatment. What better way to provide this care than by saying, ?You can?t get to us?? ?Then we?ll come to you.??

3 Strategies to Managing Rude Co-Workers

The pressures of work can take a toll on us. Some people are unable to handle the pressing deadlines or the increased workload, and soon they channel their frustration and anger to co-workers. Of course, there are some individuals who don?t require an excuse to be rude, but the pressures of day-to-day activities often trigger unprofessional and inconsiderate behavior.

No one has a right to insult you, and you should never put up with it. How you handle the situation is important. In some cases, you can ignore a rude comment, but most cases require that you confront the problem. We are more likely to respond inappropriately when caught off-guard, but there are strategies to handle an acute episode. Good advice is to avoid reacting too quick to the event. Even taking 10 seconds to consider the intent of the comment will allow you to formulate an effective response.

Let?s discuss three strategies to managing rude co-workers:

#1: Consider the source.

You?re sitting in a product development meeting, and your boss says the following to you: ?Christina, the reason you?re having difficulties managing the team is because you?re a poor planner.

Didn?t we send you to leadership training? You should be prepared by now?? Obviously, this comment coming from your boss is hurtful, especially when said in front of colleagues.

Given that your boss is the source of this comment, you have to make sure that your response is professional. Try this one: ?Jack, the team is having a few problems, and I take full responsibility for their performance.

We are making good strides, and I expect all deliverables will be met. Regarding my performance ? I will schedule time on your calendar to discuss.??Christina assumed responsibility for any shortcomings, but she also emphasized that the work will get done. She is right to suggest a private meeting to discuss performance issues. In addition, she will make it clear to Jack that she will not tolerate being embarrassed in front of the team.?

#2: Be prepared for the unexpected.

There are some people in your organization who constantly make off-the-wall comments. In some cases, these comments are unprofessional, and unrelated to one?s work. For example, ?Larry, you?re erratic in your decision-making. I?m sure that?s why you?re having marital problems.? One?s personal matters are just that ? personal.

Here?s a good response to this comment: ?Felicia, I?m unsure of why you made this comment, and I don?t appreciate it. Please note that all future discussions between us must be business-related.??If Felicia fails to honor your request, you have the option contact your line manager or go directly to HR.

#3: Avoid falling in the trap.

Regardless of the rude comment, make sure that you think it through before responding. Leave the great one-liners to Hollywood. When someone makes a comment that you consider unprofessional, consider the source and the intent. You must process the information before reacting.

It?s often more effective to show confusion and bewilderment regarding the rude comment than reacting with anger. You can ask the following questions: ?Do you really mean what you said????Why do you think that of me?? ?What specifically did I do or say to make you feel that way.??Of course, you should also make it clear that you will not tolerate rude comments, particularly those made in a public setting.

Rude people are here to stay, and we must be prepared to manage unprofessional situations. You can?t go wrong by sticking to the facts, and avoid falling into a trap where you respond with a negative comment. This approach is counterproductive. A leader understands that it?s much better to identify the root cause of the problem, and do whatever possible to prevent it from occurring in the future.

Iranian insider: Israel will be destroyed if the West attacks Syria

A former Iranian intelligence officer in the Revolutionary Guard Corps is warning the West that any attack on Syria will spark a coordinated counterattack on Israel that will obliterate the Jewish state.

?The West is quite familiar with the doctrine of ?The Sword of Damocles.? This is the sword that constantly is kept on the neck of the enemy, and at any time the enemy makes a mistake, then its precious one is killed,? said Hassan Abbasi during a conference held Thursday in Iran titled ?Syria, the First Line of Resistance.?

?The Islamic resistance has its sword on the neck of the Zionist regime,? Abbasi said, ?and with such a hostage, if NATO, which has plans to attack Syria, commits to its plan, we will then reveal our strategy.?

Abbasi heads the Center for Doctrinal Strategic Studies, one of the most radical elements in the Islamic regime. He helped develop the strategy of engaging American forces both in Iraq and Afghanistan, believing such action on this proxy level would not only force the U.S. out of those countries but also keep it too busy to even think about an attack on Iran, giving Iran free time to pursue its illicit nuclear program.

Abbasi rattled Iran?s sabers at Europe in 2005, saying that his country had ?a strategy drawn up for the destruction of Anglo Saxon civilization. We must make use of everything we have at hand to strike at this front by means of our suicide operations or by means of missiles.?

Abbasi and other officers also plotted the expansion of terror networks around the world, including on U.S. soil. Iran has stated on the record that it has identified more than 800 sensitive sites in the U.S. for attacks, believing that the threat is an incentive for the West to steer clear of any confrontation with Iran.

According to Mashregh news, an outlet run by the Revolutionary Guards, Abbasi said that since the beginning of the Arab Spring ? which Iran calls the ?Islamic Awakening? ? four American-backed governments have already collapsed.

?Under the current condition where operations are in place for revolutions in Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Jordan and other countries ? the terrorist activities in the heart of Syria are of utmost importance to us,? Abbasi said.

?The oppressors ? having $16 trillion in debt, and where 27 countries within the European Union are consumed with economic problems ? are trying to change the environment of the current Islamic Awakening,? he added.

?The first wave of awakening was the Islamic revolution in Iran, the second wave of awakening in Lebanon and Palestine, and the third wave of the Islamic movements was in 12 Arabian countries, which the West is trying to stop.?

Abbasi said the next phase of the ?awakening,? as Iranian supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei stated in 2011, is action by ?oppressed Muslims? in Europe. The fifth is the Occupy Wall Street movement in the U.S.

The United States, he said, is deceiving itself in thinking the Arab Spring is a movement against the region?s dictators, and not a revolt against America and the Israel.

The ?unraveling in Syria? is part of an American-Israeli plot, he alleged, considering the rise of the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt and the new threat on the southwest. Israel and the U.S., he continued, aim to secure the Jewish state?s borders from the Golan Heights to southern Turkey, a NATO member.

?The main reason for the unraveling in Syria, caused by this Western plot, is to show that the regional movements are not anti-America and anti-Zionist,? he said. ?And of course with the elimination of Syria, they want to destroy the resistance in Lebanon.?

Abbasi warned that their ?oppressors? want to turn Syria into another Libya ?where they start with conflicts within, then a NATO bombardment to replace the current government.?

?It?s necessary to warn the American strategists that the Zionist regime is hostage to three forces: one, the Syrian government, then the resistance in Lebanon, and last the Islamic resistance in Gaza,? Abbasi said.

If Syria is attacked by NATO, he warned, the resistance, instead of responding to NATO, will attack Israel.

Iran not only has sent forces to help Assad suppress the uprising, but also has established a joint war room with Syria and Hezbollah, warning that any aggression against Syria will result in a brutal response. (RELATED: Iran will not tolerate fall of Assad, establishes joint ?war room? with Syria, Hezbollah)

Syria?s Bashar Assad has rejected all efforts by the international community to stop the massacre, which so far has killed more than 17,000 people, including women and children.

The Finance Corner: How To Handle a Worker's Compensation Claim

Even the best employers utilizing the safest procedures and taking every conceivable precaution might find themselves dealing with a workers compensation claim. Instead of seeing the claim as disgruntled employee's attempt to cash out, think of it as your duty as an employer to compensate a person that is hurt doing the job you are paying them to do. If this is your first time handling a workers compensation claim, you might not even know exactly what it is.

At its most basic, workers compensation is a payment from an employer to one of his/her employees for injuries or illnesses resulting from work. Many businesses have insurance for workers compensation claims, especially if the business they run is dangerous, and so the employer pays due to the insurance company and the insurance company covers the claim. Workers compensation laws, stating what injuries and illnesses are applicable and how much money the employer will owe for them, vary from state to state.

Here are a few tips for avoiding and handling a workers compensation claim:

Have a clear policy statement that requires all employees to report any suspected injuries to superiors or a designated person. Note that false claims will lead to termination of employment and put the notice in your employee manual after you've announced it.

Once an injury is brought to somebody's attention, document everything. After the employee has received care, have him/her write and sign a statement about the origin of the injury, and if there were other people involved or in the room have them do the same.

Make sure the employee gets the care he/she needs. Does he/she need to go to the emergency room? If you can send a supervisor with him/her that may be to your benefit, but make sure that you don't make your employee uncomfortable.

Familiarize yourself with your state's workers compensation laws. What injuries qualify? How much do employers usually pay for the kind of claim you're dealing with? Knowledge is power.

Institute practices that will avoid an injury repeating itself: If someone slipped on a wet floor, buy a sign that will caution future pedestrians. This won't deflect your current claim, but if two employees are injured in the same preventable manner, you might find yourself in a very precarious situation.

Show the claiming employee that you value him/her. Stay in touch while he/she is out of work, and encourage them to keep taking their medication or participating in whatever therapy they are using. It's always easier to deal with a non-hostile claimant.

Report the injury to your insurance company immediately and maintain open communication with them. Even though you are filling out forms, don't treat it as menial labor! Detailed, thorough information can often be the difference between a claim covered by an insurance company and one tossed to the side.About the Author:?When John Stallworth isn?t reviewing the best?contractor insurance?rates, he is busy providing legal consulting or?building his handmade sailboat that he hopes to sale across Lake Michigan one day.

The bicycle rim, like the bicycle frame hasn?t changed much in design, it does still round and always will be. From the first wooden rims the next were made of steel, then alloy and now if you can afford it, carbon. Of all bicycle parts the bicycle rims no matter the front or Rear Rims can make a big difference to how your bike handles. A rim is known as the outer edge of a wheel which holds the tire. It forms the external circular design of the wheel upon which the inner edge of the tires are mounted on bikes and other vehicles. For instance, when you see a bicycle, you will notice that on its wheel, the rim is a huge hoop which attaches to the eternal ends of the spokes of the wheels in order to hold the tube and the tire. So, it?s vital for you to buy both Front Rims and rear rims from a reputed store instead of choosing any random one. You may often get confused as the internet has gifted you with many options including 26 Bike Rims and 29er rims for your bike. In order to save your time, you often pick the first one which comes to your notice. But, a silly mistake on your part can prove to be fatal. Thus, you need to first explore the various websites, view their offerings and then select the best among them. All rims including 26 Bicycle Rims designed for use with rim brakes provide a smooth parallel braking surface, while rims meant for use with disc brakes or hub brakes sometimes lack this surface. Rims can either have a single-wall or double-wall cross section. Mountain bikes are used for different purposes, so you need to adjust your bike rim and make it fit to perform its job. Always remember that the rim is one of the primary considerations because it is where the mountain bike wheels will be mounted upon. When sporting a rim it is always true that the more you pay for, the better quality product you get.In buying bike rims, get you money?s worth and head towards a bike shop you can trust. Ask your friends who owns bikes. Ask them for the best bike shops they know. Select a bike shop that services bikes too, offering repair and maintenance. What do you know about road bicycle rims? They are the perfect road bike for a ride to the coffee shop or for a work out! Best quality is good performance for their using time, which can determine their life time. Do you need to know anything special about the 29er Rims? Not really. Most bicycles come with rims appropriate to their overall quality. You can spend as much money as you want on the outskirts, like everything else associated with the sport of bicycling-but what comes standard on the bike may be sufficient. Customizing your rims will bring you fancy rims, maybe lighter rims, probably stronger rims, but research on what constitutes the best rim weight, strength and shape is still largely inconclusive, and because this feature causes so few problems for the recreational rider, you can leave these problems to a professional mechanic who services the world class cyclists. When they have completed these problems, you?ll know about it!
